Description

You are required to submit a Research Proposal consisting of a Literature Evidence Review and a Research Design about your chosen area of research.

The Literature Evidence Review must evaluate the context for your research and include academic research, concepts and models relevant to your chosen area. It should also include a critical evaluation of relevant theoretical and practical dimensions that demonstrates breadth of understanding and depth of critical evaluation. This review requires analysis and evaluation of evidence, and the secondary sources must be informed by theory and appropriate practice. A literature gap that justifies the rationale for this study should be identified and explained. Finally, it should include a summary of the findings from the literature and how these link your research objectives and research questions.

The Research Design must include a background which describes the basic situation underlying your research proposal. It must include a statement of the problem or opportunity that is the aim of the proposal. It must describe the rationale for your project, why you wish to carry out this research and the anticipated contributions of the research study. You must formulate research questions, research objectives and conceptual framework that enable you to solve the problem or explore an opportunity about your chosen area of research.

Your research design should fully evaluate and describe the research methods that will be utilised to successfully complete the research study. Data collection methods must be selected and described which are consistent with the chosen research philosophy: these can include sampling plan, secondary and/or primary data sources. The methods that you will propose to collect and analyse the data must be justified. The research methodological decisions must be substantiated with clear justification. Finally, validity, reliability and ethical considerations relevant to the research must be discussed and a time plan outlining the milestones of the research study must be included in the Gantt chart format.

Further points:

  • It is highly recommended that you use current peer-reviewed journals and articles to ensure that you have an in-depth understanding of your topic particularly for the Literature Evidence Review.
  • The linkage between theory and practice must be demonstrated via discussions.
  • Harvard style of referencing should be used.

01. INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
1.1.1 Background of the sector
Higher education plays significant role in any state towards achieving social, economic and cultural development. Therefore, it is considered as backbone of the society. Sri Lanka is the country which provides free education from kindergarten to university. As a result of free education system, Sri Lanka has been pushed to the leading position of South Asia in term of literacy rate, human development index and school enrollment rate and gender parity in education (Alawattegama, 2020). Currently, there are 15 state universities in Sri Lanka under University Grant Commission (UGC). Instead of that, there are seven postgraduate institutes and nine other higher educational institutes all under UGC supervision. Further, this sector has technical institutes, training institutes and private education institutes which have been granted degree awarding status by UGC (Ministry of education , 2022). Even though, free education has immensely contributed to the social and economic development of the country, there are many challenges in education sector in Sri Lanka. Specially, in higher education sector, significant change is required to cope with the dynamic world
In service sector, the human resource is the most important asset. In regards higher education sector, academics are the most important professionals which make significant contribution to the success of the sector. Thus, it is important to create favorable working condition for academics in universities and other higher education institutes to get the best out of them. In the environment that academics are satisfied and motivated, institutes has achieved better success rate.
1.1.2 Problem or issue identified and the boundaries of the research
Even though, working environment is crucial for the development of higher education sector, academics of Sri Lankan higher education sector experiences many different difficulties such as covering higher lecturing loads, publishing high quality researches, conducting their administrative tasks and community services etc. Further, infrastructure development are not up the standard. Therefore, it is challenging to develop productive workplace at state universities in Sri Lanka. Within this kind of challenging environment, quality academic staff is the key to maintain the standard quality of state university. Thus, retaining the quality staff is vital.
It's usual to refer to a worker's intentions to quit the current workplace as the potential to explore alternative job opportunities. There are both internal and external factors that could affect to make employees change their workplace. Searching the better financial reward and career development are the main motivators for employees to find alternative job opportunities (Al- Suraihi, et al., 2021). Instead of that, employees leave company for searching different organizational culture or working environment, seeking better management relationship, seeking better work life balance etc. (Al- Suraihi, et al., 2021). Not like corporate sector, higher financial reward is not the key reason to employee turnover in higher education sector.
Usual level of employee turnover is favorable for higher education sector. It provides more opportunity to young academics to enter to the sector. Young academic can bring innovation to the sector. However, unusual increase of employee turnover indicates the serious organizational or industrial issue. According to latest data, employee turnover of state universities has reached to alarming level. In 2022, 20% of lecturers of state universities have left their job. End of 2023, it is anticipated that employee turnover rate will increase more (Wijebandara, et al., 2022). According to the research, many academics had left the job with intention of migrating (Wijebandara, et al., 2022). Many young academics plan to leave the country for seeking better quality of life. This is also a result of loss of faith in the nation caused by the economic crisis. Instead of that, many internal and external factors could be causing this. Therefore, it is important to identify factors that cause to increase the employee turnover of academics in higher education sector. Same time, it is crucial to identify the mitigation action plans to reduce the employee turnover.
Workplace spirituality is a modern concept of human resource management focusing on manage inner life of individual and believing eventually inner life leads to better outer life (Ashomos & Duchon, 2000). Workplace spiritualty is considered as a concept that affect the work environment and organizational culture positively (Ashomos & Duchon, 2000). Therefore, in this study, it is considered how workplace spirituality can be used as tool to reduce employee turnover in state universities of Sri Lanka.
Further, relationship between workplace spirituality and employee turnover is not properly researched in Sri Lanka. Previous studies which conducted in regard this subject in other countries, provide contradicting findings. It reveals that there is a knowledge gap in this area to fulfill. Thus, the purpose of this study is to identify the impact of workplace spiritualty on employee turnover of state universities in Sri Lanka.
Therefore, definition of the problem is that how the workplace spirituality impacts on employee turnover of state universities in Sri Lanka.
1.1.3 Significance and Rationale of the Research

Further, regarding academic significance, conceptual framework which will be applied for this study will be useful for future researchers to use as reference guide to develop new conceptual frameworks.
Practically, this study will provide guidance to policy makers of higher education sector to take mitigation actions proactively to reduce the employee turnover. Employee turnover is KPI that indicate the performance of human resource management department. Thus, professionals of HRM sector will be benefited from the findings of the study to create better working conditions for employees. Further, higher management can apply workplace spirituality approach in their workplace based on the findings of this study to promote spirituality based behavior in workplace.
